In an effort to halt the ongoing strike by Organized Labour, the Federal Government, through the National Salaries, Wages, and Income Commission, has extended an invitation to the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.
It remains uncertain if the labour leaders will attend the proposed meeting.
According to The PUNCH, various unions have already closed their workplaces in line with the directive from the two labour unions to initiate an indefinite nationwide strike.
Last Friday, organized labour announced the commencement of a nationwide indefinite strike in response to the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated that the strike would commence at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
In a joint statement with TUC President Festus Osifo, they expressed significant concerns and disappointment over the Federal Government’s failure to finalize and enact a new National Minimum Wage Act.
The labour leaders also called for the government to reverse the electricity tariff hike to N65/kWh.
Previously, the unions had set a deadline of May 31, 2024, for concluding negotiations on the new minimum wage. However, discussions broke down on Tuesday after both parties presented their offers.
The government increased its initial proposal of N57,000 by N3,000, bringing it to N60,000. This offer was rejected by labour during the meeting.
In response, labour reduced their previous demand of N497,000 by N3,000, resulting in a new proposal of N494,000.
