The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, on Tuesday mobilized a team of officials to the collapsed mining site in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
The team, comprising the Federal Mines Officer and officials of the Mines Inspectorate, has been deployed to rescue trapped miners and investigate the cause of the accident.
According to the Minister on his X handle, seven victims have been rescued so far, with some sustaining injuries.
He wrote, “We have mobilized our Federal Mines Officer (FMO) and officials of the Mines Inspectorate to the collapsed mining site in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.
“Upon learning of the incident, we worked closely with the mining company to rescue seven victims, some with injuries. Rescue operations with excavators are currently underway to ensure we avert any loss of lives.
“I recently announced a policy that makes remedial measures for mining pits mandatory as part of the criteria for applying for mining licenses. This policy aims to minimize such accidents in the future.
“We are actively monitoring the situation at the mining site operated by African Minerals and Logistics Ltd.
“Rest assured, we will investigate the causes of the disaster to prevent a recurrence and ensure the safety of all Nigerians.”
