Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has expressed concern over the arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress president, Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services on Monday.
Falana revealed that the secret service has not provided any explanation for Ajaero’s detention, emphasizing that the arrest is unrelated to a recent police invitation extended to the labour leader.
“The police invitation to Comrade Joe Ajaero was rescheduled last week,” Falana stated. “I have been in contact with the police, and they confirmed that the arrest has no connection to that invitation.”
Ajaero was reportedly arrested at the airport while en route to London to attend the ongoing Trades Union Congress conference. “He was detained by the DSS this morning at the airport, and no reason has been given for his arrest,” Falana added.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential implications for labour movements in the country. Authorities have yet to make an official statement on the situation.
