The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has temporarily closed the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, to facilitate critical upgrades aimed at enhancing infrastructure and meeting international aviation standards.
FAAN confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, stating that the Federal Government approved the closure to allow for essential improvements at the facility.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, due to ongoing upgrade works,” the statement read.
The Nigeria Airspace Management Agency has consequently suspended operations at the airport and closed the runway in adherence to International Civil Aviation Organisation, regulations.
The statement further noted that the upgrade is part of the Oyo State Government’s broader plan to elevate the airport from domestic to international status, with various remodelling and expansion efforts underway.
“In compliance with aviation safety recommended standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel,” FAAN stated.
The agency appealed for understanding from stakeholders and passengers, emphasizing that the temporary shutdown aligns with safety and operational best practices.
