Former Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, has expressed strong support for the embattled Napoli’s forward, Victor Osimhen, amidst the ongoing transfer saga that has stirred controversy both in Italy and among Nigerian football fans.
Ighalo, known for his successful stints with various clubs around the world, including Watford and Al-Shabab, made it clear that he stands firmly behind his fellow Nigerian international.
The 34-year-old striker, who has often been vocal about issues affecting Nigerian players, took to social media to voice his concerns about the backlash Osimhen has faced.
The Napoli striker, who has been at the center of transfer rumours throughout the summer, has also been subjected to heavy criticism online, particularly from some of his compatriots.
Ighalo, disheartened by the negativity directed at Osimhen, highlighted the importance of understanding the challenges athletes face, especially when they represent their country on the global stage.
In his heartfelt message, Ighalo said, “No human being is perfect and we have all made mistakes in life, but seeing comments about this young man from his own country people makes me really sad, without even knowing what happened.”
This sentiment reflects the emotional toll the situation has taken on Osimhen, who has consistently delivered for both club and country.
Ighalo also revealed that he had personally spoken to Osimhen, noting the deep pain and disappointment the young forward is currently experiencing.
“I spoke to him and I can feel the pain in his voice, the way he’s been treated, this young man plays with heart and pains for his country,” Ighalo added, underscoring the dedication and sacrifice Osimhen has shown despite the adversity he faces.
Concluding his statement, Ighalo expressed his belief that Osimhen will emerge from this challenging period stronger than before.
“Hmmm, it’s well, he will definitely be back stronger, we learn every day in life,” he said, offering a message of resilience and hope to his younger compatriot, who continues to navigate the complexities of his career both on and off the field.
