Tottenham Hotspur ended their four-game losing streak in the Premier League with a much-needed 2-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday.
The win, which came at the Gtech Community Stadium, was secured through an own goal by Vitaly Janelt and a late strike from substitute Pape Matar Sarr.
It was only Spurs’ second league victory in their last 12 matches, providing a crucial boost to their struggling campaign.
The first half was an intense battle, but neither side showcased much quality in the final third.
The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Spurs captain Son Heung-Min delivered a dangerous corner into the box.
The ball took an unfortunate deflection off Brentford’s Janelt and ended up in the back of the net, giving the visitors a valuable lead. Despite their efforts to respond, the Bees struggled to carve out clear-cut chances before the break.
Brentford came out with more urgency in the second half, determined to find an equalizer. Their best opportunity arrived when Yoane Wissa came close to leveling the score, but his effort from close range skimmed the crossbar.
Despite their attacking intent, Thomas Frank’s side failed to seriously test Tottenham’s defense, as they lacked a clinical edge in front of goal.
As the game wore on, Tottenham tightened their grip on proceedings, and their persistence paid off in the closing stages.
Pape Matar Sarr, who had come off the bench, put the result beyond doubt by netting Spurs’ second goal late in the match. His strike ensured Ange Postecoglou’s men left West London with all three points, easing some of the pressure on the team after their recent poor form.
The defeat marked Brentford’s fourth loss in their last five home league matches, highlighting their struggles on home soil.
They remain in 11th place with 31 points from 24 games, while Tottenham’s victory saw them move up to 14th in the table with 27 points.
With the business end of the season approaching, both teams will need to find more consistency to improve their league standings.
