Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has approved a salary increment for the 459 customary court judges across the state’s 153 customary courts.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement by Dr. Reuben Onyishi, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media.
According to Onyishi, the new salary structure will take effect in January 2025, aligning with the state’s N80,000 minimum wage.
The adjustment, he said, is part of efforts to address the rising cost of living, which prompted the national minimum wage increase to N70,000 and the state government’s upward review to N80,000.
“This review stems from a memo dated November 25, 2024, submitted by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, Mr. Osinachi Nnajieze. The governor, in his usual magnanimity, approved the proposal,” Onyishi stated.
Under the new structure, the salary for chairpersons of the courts will rise from N42,989.76 to N92,989.76. Similarly, the two members of each court will see their pay increase from N39,736.18 to N89,736.18.
“This decision underscores the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of judicial officers and ensuring they are adequately compensated for their critical roles,” Onyishi added.
