The Director-General of the National Youths Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has urged corps members to refrain from thinking about relocating back to their home communities, stressing that life extends far beyond their familiar surroundings.
Ahmed shared this advice during his visit to the NYSC temporary orientation camp in Kaduna on Friday, where he addressed the corps members of the 2024 Batch ‘C stream I’.
He encouraged the corps members to make their posted locations feel like home, emphasizing the importance of adapting to new environments.
According to him, cultivating a sense of belonging in their host communities is essential for a successful service year.
“Embrace new experiences and be open to change. This will foster personal growth and development,” Ahmed said.
He stressed that their primary focus should be on positively impacting their host communities and taking proactive steps to contribute to their development.
The NYSC DG also advised corps members to respect the local cultures and traditions of their host communities, reminding them to “remain peaceful and resilient as you add value to the community you are posted to.”
He expressed confidence that many of them might choose to remain in their host communities after their service year and stressed the importance of prioritizing security.
“Your security is our concern, but no one can secure you more than yourself,” Ahmed added.
Emphasizing the significance of skills acquisition and entrepreneurship, Ahmed urged the corps members to seize the opportunity for self-reliance and productivity.
“Skills acquisition is designed to make you independent, self-reliant, and productive. The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that youths are empowered to stand on their own. Thousands of your predecessors who maximized this opportunity are now independent,” he remarked.
However, the NYSC boss warned against unauthorized night travels and inappropriate dressing, urging corps members to avoid actions that could tarnish the reputation of the scheme.
