The Eko Electricity Distribution Company has announced that customers can still upgrade their meters despite the expiration of the November 24 deadline.
The company clarified on its official platforms that while customers who have not yet upgraded their meters will not be able to vend, the upgrade process is still available.
“Can I still upgrade my meter now that the Token Identifier rollover deadline is over? Yes! You can still upgrade your meter to STS 2,” Eko DisCo confirmed.
The utility provider instructed customers to visit its website and obtain two sets of 20-digit Key Change Tokens which they need to load sequentially in order to complete the upgrade.
“Do note that this upgrade is mandatory. You will not be able to vend or load your token until your meter is upgraded. This upgrade is free,” the statement further emphasized.
As of Monday, it was reported that about three million electricity customers could face estimated billing or even power cuts due to failure to upgrade their prepaid meters, unless a last-minute intervention occurs.
Many customers expressed frustration as they approached the deadline, with some citing technical issues while others complained about power outages. Furthermore, many reported that their meters could not be upgraded due to obsolescence.
It was also noted that those whose meters cannot be upgraded will have to either endure darkness or face the estimated billing system unless they receive a new meter from their utility company.
Alternatively, some individuals may opt to purchase a new meter if the waiting period for a free replacement is too long.
