Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has announced that additional players will be invited to join the national team as they prepare for their crucial two-legged Africa Nations Championship qualifying match against Ghana.
“This is not the final squad. There are some players we are still looking at. We have a pool of a lot of players. Next week, some will come back, and others will not. We will try to come up with a formidable team in the end,” Eguavoen stated, highlighting his commitment to assembling the best possible lineup.
The announcement came shortly after Eguavoen expressed his satisfaction with the talent and potential displayed by the players during their initial training sessions.
“Very impressive, only two training sessions, but you can see that technically they are very good,” he remarked in a video shared on NFF TV, indicating a positive start to their preparations.
He acknowledged, however, that there remains much work to be done as the players transition from different club environments.
“We still have a lot of work to do because they are coming from different clubs. We have to try to see how we can blend them into one unit,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their upcoming matches.
Eguavoen initially called up 35 players to the national camp in Abuja, where they conducted their first training session on Wednesday.
The Super Eagles will face Ghana in the first leg of the qualifying fixture from December 20 to 22, 2024, with the return leg scheduled for a week later in Nigeria.
The stakes are high, as the winner over the two-legged encounter will secure an automatic spot in the 2025 CHAN, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, making this a pivotal moment for Nigerian football.
