The regional editor for The Conversation Africa, Adejuwon Soyinka, has been released by the Department of State Services after being detained for six hours.
According to Premium Times, his release followed the intervention of the International Press Institute Nigeria.
As part of the conditions for his release, the DSS seized Soyinka’s passport and requested that he provide his Nigerian residential address and a reliable phone number to facilitate future contact.
This development was reported by Premium Times.
Confirming his release, “I have just been released by the DSS in Lagos. They are holding on to my passport, though. I am in an Uber ride ordered for me by the Deputy Director of DSS in Lagos.”
Soyinka was arrested by DSS operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday morning, shortly after arriving on a Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom.
The arrest was first reported by a friend of the journalist, who sent a message to Punch, saying, “Adejuwon Soyinka has been detained by officers of the Department of State Security at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The incident happened around 5:40 am on Sunday, the 25th of August, 2024, shortly after he arrived in Nigeria.”
As of the time of this report, the DSS has not provided any reasons for Soyinka’s detention.
