Protesters in Asaba, Delta State, have convened at the well-known Interbua Roundabout, where there is a significant security presence.
The demonstration began with two young men around 9:30 am, swelling to 10 participants and then to 15 by 10:20 am. They carried placards with messages such as #EndBadGovernment and ‘Hardship Everywhere’.
The demonstrators claimed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had, on Tuesday, distributed millions of naira to certain youth groups to sabotage the protest.
A protester, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “We are here with placards; we don’t have any guns, cutlasses, or any weapons. I came here to satisfy my conscience.
“I’m calling on Deltans to come out and not to fear. The security agencies are here to protect us, not to kill us.
“We are not a group; we are citizens exercising our rights. Those youths who collected money from the Governor are a disgrace to the youth.”
He further noted that fear of security threats has also deterred people from joining the protest.
