The Delta State House of Assembly has passed the 2024 Electricity Power Sector Bill into law.
This development comes in order to enhance the state’s power supply.
The executive bill, which was expedited through the legislative process, was passed on Wednesday after its third reading during a plenary session led by Speaker Dennis Guwor.
The motion to expedite the bill was introduced by the Majority Leader, Emeka Nwaobi, who called for the suspension of Order 12, Rules 79-83 of the Assembly’s standing rules.
This suspension was necessary to allow for the third reading and subsequent passage of the bill.
The motion received widespread support, with a second from Frank Esenwah, the PDP member representing Oshimili North Constituency.
When the Speaker called for a voice vote, the motion was adopted without any opposition.
Following the bill’s passage, Speaker Guwor expressed his satisfaction, emphasizing the importance of the law in addressing the state’s energy challenges.
“The passage of this bill represents a significant step in improving electricity supply in the state. I believe it will promote living standards and enhance the overall well-being of the people of Delta State,” he said.
He further praised the commitment and hard work of the lawmakers, acknowledging their collective effort in ensuring the bill’s successful passage.
“Distinguished colleagues, I sincerely appreciate your support and contributions throughout the legislative process of this bill. I am grateful for your immense efforts in improving the electricity sector of the state,” the Speaker added.
Once the bill is signed into law by the state governor, it is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting electricity supply, which in turn is anticipated to stimulate economic activities and improve the quality of life for residents across the state.
