Tragedy struck in the Lekki area of Lagos State as a two-storey building under construction collapsed on Tuesday evening, leaving two people dead and six others injured.
Rescue efforts, led by emergency responders, continued through the night. Initial reports confirmed the death of an unidentified male worker and injuries sustained by three others.
However, by Wednesday, officials revealed that a second victim, a 15-year-old boy, had also been recovered from the rubble.
Confirming the casualties, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated, “A teenager, about 15 years old, and an adult male were recovered and confirmed dead. Their remains were bagged and handed over to the appropriate health authorities for further action.”
He added that six individuals were rescued and received medical attention from the agency’s medical team.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had earlier reported that a search and rescue operation was ongoing at the site, as emergency responders worked to clear the debris.
Oke-Osanyintolu further disclosed that the structure had been completely demolished using specialized heavy-duty equipment. “The collapsed building has been brought to ground zero,” he said.
