A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State, on Friday sentenced a 19-year-old trader, Aliyu Ibrahim, to one month in prison for stealing clothes valued at N32,000.
Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos conducted a summary trial and handed down the sentence after Ibrahim admitted to the theft.
The magistrate also offered an alternative: a N10,000 fine in lieu of imprisonment.
Prosecutor Inspector Ijuptil Thawal had earlier informed the court that the incident occurred on May 4, when Garba Mohammed reported the theft at the Railway Police Station in Jos.
According to the prosecution, Ibrahim had trespassed into the railway quarters and stolen seven pieces of clothing before being apprehended.
The charge against Ibrahim falls under the Plateau Penal Code Law, which prescribes penalties for such offenses.
