A Customary Court in Rumuogba, Rivers State, has ruled that Mrs. Kate Ngbor can no longer continue using her former husband’s surname, 11 years after their divorce.
In suit no: OCC/9/2021, the claimant, Chief Sam Ngbor, sought a court order preventing his ex-wife from bearing his name.
After hearing arguments from both parties—represented by E.O. Erhirhi Esq. for the claimant and R.U. Egwenre Esq. for the defendant—the court ruled in favor of the claimant.
Granting the order, the court declared that Mrs. Ngbor had no right to continue using the name “Ngbor” or “Sam-Ngbor” without the express permission of her former husband.
In its judgment, the court further ruled, “The court ordered the defendant to revert to her maiden name or any other name of her choice, excepting ‘Ngbor’ or ‘Sam-Ngbor’ as the case may be.”
Additionally, the court restrained the defendant from identifying herself as “Mrs. Kate Ngbor” or “Mrs. Kate Sam-Ngbor” in any form.
