A devastating accident occurred late Friday at the Area Command Bus Stop in Nnewi, Anambra State, when a truck carrying cement lost control and crashed into a residential building, resulting in multiple fatalities, including five children from the same family.
According to The PUNCH, eyewitnesses reported that the incident happened in the evening as residents gathered outside their homes, and the affected family was preparing for dinner.
The truck, reportedly experiencing brake failure, veered off the road, colliding with several structures before finally ramming into the house.
“The crash was sudden and terrifying. The loud noise drew many people to the scene, and there was chaos as residents tried to rescue those trapped,” a witness recounted.
Another resident described the heartbreaking aftermath, stating, “The truck crushed several buildings before hitting the house. It was a tragic Valentine’s Day for many in the neighborhood. The mother of the deceased children was in distress, and people gathered to console her.”
A senior officer at the Nnewi Area Command, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident. “The driver lost control due to brake failure and crashed into a residential building, leading to multiple casualties. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash,” he said.
The spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, Margaret Onabe also confirmed the accident. “We recorded the incident on Friday night and are gathering more details from our personnel on the ground,” she stated.
