Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy, has refuted allegations that Christians are facing persecution under the current government.
He reaffirmed Tinubu’s dedication to fostering religious harmony and peaceful coexistence.
Bwala’s response follows a recent decision by the United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee, which approved sanctions against Nigeria over alleged widespread violence targeting Christian communities.
The subcommittee’s resolution grants former US President Donald Trump the authority to enforce strict measures against Nigeria in response to the reported attacks.
During a congressional hearing on Wednesday, US lawmakers criticized the Nigerian government for what they described as its failure to protect Christians from escalating violence.
However, addressing the matter on social media platform X, Bwala dismissed the subcommittee’s findings, arguing that they lacked proper context and relevant timelines.
He stated, “The administration of @officialABAT President Bola Tinubu promotes religious tolerance. Since May 29th 2023, when President Tinubu assumed the office as president, there have been little or no case at all of persecution of Christians anywhere in the country.”
Bwala further clarified, “Secondly, while we are in no way admitting or authenticating the report of the US foreign relations committee, it is note worthy to state that the committee’s report falls short of context and timelines.
“President Bola Tinubu remains committed to promoting peace and religious tolerance.”
