Caretaker manager Mike Tullberg began his interim spell at Borussia Dortmund with a frustrating 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen, as BVB squandered a two-goal lead despite a spirited effort with 10 men.
The result extended Dortmund’s winless streak to five matches across all competitions.
Tullberg, stepping in from his role as under-19 coach, was handed the reins after the club parted ways with Nuri Şahin, who had overseen four consecutive defeats.
The caretaker boss faced an uphill battle in his first game, and matters quickly worsened when Nico Schlotterbeck was sent off midway through the first half.
The defender saw red for the third time in his Bundesliga career after being judged to have denied Marvin Ducksch a clear scoring chance, leaving Dortmund to navigate the majority of the contest shorthanded.
Despite their disadvantage, Dortmund broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. Serhou Guirassy rose to meet Julian Ryerson’s well-delivered cross, heading the ball off the crossbar and into the net after Julian Brandt set up the chance with a clever pass.
It was only Guirassy’s second league goal since November, but it provided Dortmund with a vital breakthrough.
The striker then played a key role in doubling the lead early in the second half. Positioned at the back post, Guirassy met Pascal Groß’s cross and directed the ball toward the far post.
A fortunate deflection off Marco Friedl helped it into the net, giving the hosts a seemingly comfortable advantage.
Werder Bremen, however, began to fight back, with substitute Leonardo Bittencourt sparking hope for the visitors.
Just after the hour mark, he unleashed a stunning first-time strike from the edge of the box, sending the ball soaring into the top corner.
Sensing an opportunity, Bremen capitalized on their momentum through Marvin Ducksch, who equalized minutes later.
The Dortmund-born striker guided a low effort past the near post, scoring his first goal against his hometown club to level the match.
As Bremen continued to press for a winner, Dortmund managed to hold firm and secure a point. The result left BVB in 10th place, trailing their opponents—also winless in four Bundesliga games—by a single point.
