Serhou Guirassy made history on Saturday, becoming the first Borussia Dortmund player since Erling Haaland to score four goals in a single Bundesliga match, powered Dortmund to a commanding 6-0 victory over Union Berlin.
Reflecting on his achievement, Guirassy expressed his excitement to Sky, “Four goals, victory, amazing fans. The first time in my life, I think. Four goals is such a great thing. I’m happy of course, but always, the most important is the team and the victory.”
The last Dortmund player to hit four goals in one match was Haaland, who accomplished the feat against Hertha Berlin in November 2020.
Head coach Niko Kovač had high praise for the Guinea international, calling his display “world class.”
He also commended midfielder Pascal Gross for delivering four assists.
Guirassy had struggled to replicate his prolific form from last season at Stuttgart, where he netted 28 goals in as many Bundesliga games.
Prior to this weekend’s fixture, he had only managed nine goals in 19 league appearances for Dortmund.
The forward joined the Black and Yellows last summer after two standout seasons at Stuttgart, where he scored 44 goals in 58 matches following his transfer from French side Rennes in 2022.
He was one of two Stuttgart players to move to Dortmund, alongside German defender Waldemar Anton.
However, both faced challenges early in the campaign as the club endured a difficult start.
Dortmund parted ways with Nuri Sahin as head coach in January and brought in Kovač, who previously managed Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich.
But even under new leadership, Dortmund struggled initially, losing Kovač’s first two Bundesliga matches in charge.
Their Champions League performances, however, suggested promise. Dortmund secured a convincing 3-0 victory away at Sporting Lisbon before playing to a goalless draw midweek, ensuring their spot in the tournament’s last 16.
Guirassy played a key role in that success, contributing a goal and an assist in Lisbon. His Champions League tally now stands at 10 goals and five assists this season.
At Stuttgart, he flourished alongside German forward Deniz Undav in a dynamic attacking partnership. In contrast, he has often found himself isolated in Dortmund’s setup.
However, he took full advantage of an opportunity on Saturday, benefiting from Gio Reyna’s inclusion in the starting lineup—only the American’s second Bundesliga start this season.
Dortmund will now turn their focus to their upcoming Champions League clash against Lille, buoyed by Guirassy’s resurgence.
“You always have to begin one day, and today was a great day,” Guirassy said. “I hope we can build on this.”
