Brazil’s government on Friday announced that Nigeria has been welcomed as a partner country in the BRICS multinational bloc.
Brazil, which is set to hold the presidency of BRICS in 2025, issued a statement highlighting Nigeria’s active role in “strengthening cooperation in the Global South and reforming global governance,” a key priority for Brazil.
The statement from Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, Itamaraty, noted, “As the 6th largest population in the world and the 1st on the African continent, as well as one of the largest economies in Africa, Nigeria has converging interests with the other members of the group.”
Nigeria now joins eight other nations primarily from Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia in this influential group
With Africa’s largest population and the sixth-largest globally, Nigeria aligns with BRICS members on shared interests.
The country is actively involved in promoting South-South cooperation and advocating for reforms in global governance—key focuses during Brazil’s presidency.
