Findings have indicated that no fewer than 936 people have died in several boat mishaps in the last three and half years in Nigeria.
According to Daily Trust, the figures were drawn from boat mishap in the last three years in states like Lagos, Niger, Kwara, Kebbi, Adamawa, Nasarawa and Akwa Ibom.
In 2020, 131 people were killed and several others were missing in Anambra, Cross River, Bauchi, Lagos, Benue Niger, and Sokoto, among other places.
In the year 2021, a total of 281 individuals lost their lives in various incidents that were documented in Sokoto, Bayelsa, Lagos, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Ondo, and Kebbi, among other locations.
The Kebbi event that occurred in 2021 at Warrah Village, Tsihuwan Labata, Ngaski LGA, stands out as the most fatal, resulting in the unfortunate loss of 156 lives.
The year 2022 exhibited the highest fatality rate during the examined era, resulting in the loss of at least 313 individuals. As of the present, the year 2023 has already witnessed the demise of 216 individuals.
PUNCH METRO on Monday reported that over 30 persons were reported killed in a boat mishap in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The boat capsized when the deceased were returning from a marriage ceremony in the neighbouring state of Niger.
Also, PUNCH METRO reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday directed immediate probe of recent boat mishaps that have become a recurring decimal in Nigeria.
