Nigeria’s national electricity grid experienced another collapse on Monday evening, leaving millions of Nigerians without power.
According to The PUNCH, the grid failure occurred around 6:18 pm, leading to a sharp drop in power generation from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 pm to 0.00GW by 7 pm.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the incident in a statement released shortly after the collapse. “We wish to inform our esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, 14th October 2024.
This has caused the current loss of supply across the EEDC network,” said Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications for the EEDC.
He further explained that their stations in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States were affected, and they are awaiting further updates from the National Control Centre in Osogbo.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company informed customers about the grid failure.
“The power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas,” the company stated. They assured the public that efforts were being made to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.
At the time of reporting, no further details had been provided about the cause of the collapse, but relevant authorities are working to restore electricity across affected regions.
