The Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, located in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has announced an exciting initiative to support its new programs.
According to The PUNCH, the institution is offering scholarships to the top five students in each of its five recently accredited departments.
These new departments include Petroleum Engineering, Welding and Fabrication, Oceanography, Cooperative Economics, and Maritime Technology.
The school’s Rector, Lukman Agbabiaka, revealed this scholarship offer over the weekend while guiding journalists through the facilities at the main campus in Ekowe.
“Ekowe Polytechnic is the only institution with accredited new courses in Petroleum Engineering, Welding and Fabrication, Oceanography, Cooperative Economics and Maritime Technology taken from the backdrop of our environment as a riverine community,” Agbabiaka said.
He emphasized that the polytechnic is committed to providing free scholarships to the first five students from each of these departments.
The institution aims to equip its students with professional certificate programs and skills that are competitive in the global job market.
Agbabiaka highlighted the polytechnic’s advantages, including its serene learning environment, 24-hour power supply, quality educators, and well-equipped science facilities.
The campus also features standard hostels, an e-library with free Wi-Fi, a Computer-Based Test center, and newly acquired water buses to facilitate transportation for both staff and students.
In addition to its academic facilities, the polytechnic boasts an NHIS/BHIS-accredited clinic that will cater to the healthcare needs of the surrounding community.
However, Agbabiaka expressed concern about the challenges posed by erosion and persistent flooding due to the marshy terrain.
A key issue for the institution’s management is land reclamation to support future building projects and expand the campus.
