Barcelona have confirmed that Oriol Romeu has been allowed to leave their pre-season tour in the USA to finalize his return to Girona.
Romeu, who emerged from Barca’s renowned La Masia academy, rejoined Barcelona in 2023 from Girona on a three-year contract.
During the 2023/24 season, he made 37 appearances for La Blaugrana across all competitions but has been deemed surplus to requirements for the upcoming season.
On Friday night, Barcelona announced that Romeu would be departing their US tour to return to Spain and finalize his exit.
A brief statement read, “Men’s first team squad member Oriol Romeu has left the team base in Annapolis as he looks to resolve his future.”
Reports suggest that Romeu is set to return to Girona, who are strengthening their squad ahead of their debut UEFA Champions League campaign.
He will sign on an initial loan and undergo medical tests this weekend.
Girona’s squad from their remarkable 2023/24 season, where they finished third in La Liga, has seen several departures.
Aleix Garcia and Artem Dovbyk have joined Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma, respectively, while the loans of Yan Couto, Savio, Eric Garcia, and Pablo Torre have expired.
During his initial one-season stint at Girona, Romeu made 34 appearances, helping them to a tenth-place finish.
The 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Girona’s European campaign, including a Champions League winner’s medal from his time at Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Barcelona continues its efforts to sign Spain internationals Dani Olmo and Nico Williams.
As of now, they have not added any new players to their squad in this transfer window.
