Arsenal have secured the season-long loan of Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto, bringing in the experienced shot-stopper after two impressive seasons on the south coast.
Neto, who featured in 32 matches for the Cherries last season, arrives at the Emirates following Bournemouth’s acquisition of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, a move completed near the end of the transfer window.
The 35-year-old Brazilian is set to step into a backup role at Arsenal, filling the gap left by Aaron Ramsdale’s departure to Southampton.
However, Neto will not be eligible to play in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup matches, as he already participated in the competition for Bournemouth, who were eliminated by West Ham on Wednesday.
Despite this, he will be available for selection in both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, where his experience will be invaluable.
Arsenal turned to Neto after their pursuit of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia ended unsuccessfully.
The Gunners see him as a reliable understudy to David Raya, who has quickly established himself as Mikel Arteta’s preferred choice in goal.
Raya, who joined Arsenal last summer from Brentford on an initial loan, solidified his position by making 41 appearances across all competitions during the 2023/24 season.
This included key roles in Arsenal’s Champions League journey and their push for the Premier League title.
Ramsdale, despite assurances from Arteta that the competition between him and Raya was open, found himself relegated to the bench, managing only 11 appearances in the last campaign.
Neto’s arrival at Arsenal is thus a strategic move to reinforce their goalkeeping options as they aim for success on multiple fronts this season.
