Argentinian President, Javier Milei, has condemned the vandalism of Lionel Messi’s apartment in Spain by climate change activists.
Milei voiced his support for Messi after the football star’s vacation home in Ibiza was defaced by radical climate activists.
On Tuesday, the activists spray-painted Messi’s mansion on the island, an act led by the group Futuro Vegetal.
They referenced an Oxfam report highlighting that the wealthiest 1% of the global population produce as much carbon emissions as the poorest two-thirds.
Reacting on his official X handle, Milei urged the Spanish government to ensure the safety of Argentinian citizens.
“In Spain, communists who want to ‘murder the rich and abolish the police to end climate change’ vandalised a home of Lionel Messi and his family.
“I stand in solidarity with the Messi family for this cowardly and delusional event and I ask Pedro Sanchez’s government to guarantee the safety of the Argentine citizens who live in the Kingdom of Spain.
“Communism is an ideology fostered by envy, hatred and resentment towards the successful. It has no place in the free and civilized world.”
Messi, who bought the luxurious home in 2022 after departing Barcelona, was not present at the time of the incident but has used the property for vacations.
The activists stated that their “non-violent civil disobedience” act aimed to hold the wealthy accountable for the climate crisis and to criticize the Spanish government’s inaction.
According to the activists, Messi’s mansion was constructed “illegally.”
Currently, the Inter Miami forward is recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the recent Copa América.
