An irate mother, identified as Madam Stella on Monday drowned her six-year-old daughter, Rachael, during a moment of rage in the Ukubie community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
The shocking incident occurred after Rachael defied her mother’s repeated warnings not to bathe in the river.
According to eyewitnesses, the little girl had gone to the waterfront when her mother discovered her and ordered her to leave. However, Rachael refused to comply.
“Despite warnings to leave the water, Rachael refused, prompting her mother to become enraged,” one eyewitness shared.
In a fit of fury, Stella reportedly grabbed her daughter’s hands and threw her into the river twice, resulting in the child’s tragic death.
When confronted by devastated community members, Stella admitted to the act, expressing regret and claiming that she never anticipated the fatal outcome.
“I regret my actions. I never knew it would happen this way,” she said, pleading for forgiveness.
A family member, Jeph Nation, expressed his heartbreak, saying, “I have recorded two deaths already in my paternal family at Ukubie this year. All were painful and heart-touching, but this one was so pathetic.”
Disturbing videos circulating on social media show Stella confessing in the Ijaw language as she stands surrounded by a crowd.
Another video depicts her sitting beside her daughter’s lifeless body in a boat, as it is transported away.
When contacted, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, confirmed that the matter had not yet been officially reported to the police.
“The matter has not been formally reported to the police,” Mohammed stated.
