The Palace of the Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom has announced the closure of all markets and shops in Akure on Tuesday, 27th August 2024, as part of the observance of the annual Aheregbe Festival.
According to a statement released by Adeyeye Michael, Chief Press Secretary to the Deji of Akure, the closure is a key component of the longstanding tradition associated with the festival.
“All markets and shops in Akure will be shut,” the statement read. “There shall be no opening of markets, trading, or shops under any guise during the festival.”
The statement urged residents, market women, and shop owners to adhere strictly to this directive, highlighting that compliance is essential in upholding the cultural heritage of the Akure Kingdom.
While all markets and shops are expected to remain closed, the directive provides an exemption for pharmacy shops, acknowledging the importance of access to healthcare services.
“In view of the importance attached to the health sector, only pharmacy shops are exempted from closure during the festival,” the statement clarified.
The palace also reassured residents that the festival would not impose any restrictions on human or vehicular movement within the town.
The statement concluded with a traditional blessing, “Akure a gbe a oo,” underscoring Deji’s commitment to maintaining cultural practices while accommodating essential services.
