AC Milan have parted ways with manager Paulo Fonseca just six months into his tenure.
The decision came on the heels of a 1-1 draw against Roma at San Siro, which left the Rossoneri languishing in eighth place in Serie A, a hefty 14 points behind league leaders Atalanta and Napoli.
In the Champions League, Milan’s campaign has been inconsistent. They currently occupy 12th place in the expanded 36-team format, having secured four wins and two losses from their six group-stage matches.
Fonseca took the reins in June, succeeding Stefano Pioli, who led the team to a second-place finish last season and famously ended their 11-year league title drought in 2022.
In a statement on their official website, Milan expressed gratitude to Fonseca for his dedication, “The club extends its gratitude to Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the very best in his future endeavors.”
As he departed San Siro on Sunday evening, Fonseca addressed reporters, confirming his exit.
“Yes, it’s true. I’m out,” he remarked from his car. “That’s life. I did everything I could.”
Looking ahead, Milan are set to face Juventus in the Italian Super Cup semi-finals, with the first leg scheduled for January 3 and the return leg on January 18.
Italian media outlets speculate that the former Porto boss, Sergio Conceicao, is the frontrunner to replace Fonseca.
Conceicao, who previously played for Lazio, Parma, and Inter Milan, concluded a successful six-year stint with Porto in June.
