The Abia State Government has announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the education, health, and oil production sectors.
According to The PUNCH, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed these developments on Tuesday during a press briefing in Umuahia, following a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu revealed plans for the large-scale recruitment of teachers for primary and secondary schools across the state. This move, he explained, is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the education sector.
“Abia State Government has finalized arrangements for the massive employment of teachers for primary and secondary schools. This is a significant step in our commitment to improving education in the state,” Kanu stated.
In addition, the state has intensified its enforcement of the Out-of-School Children Policy initiative through the Ministry of Education.
To implement this policy, education marshals have been appointed to work alongside the Harmonized Taskforce, community leaders, and security agencies to ensure compliance.
“To address the issue of out-of-school children, education marshals have been appointed. They will collaborate with the Harmonized Taskforce, community stakeholders, and security personnel to ensure every child is in school,” Kanu added.
As part of its educational reforms, the state government has introduced a Mathematics Clinic to improve foundational knowledge in science-related subjects.
“The Mathematics Clinic is a strategic initiative designed to enhance the teaching and understanding of core science disciplines,” Kanu said.
On healthcare, the government announced the imminent launch of the Abia Medical City, a flagship project aimed at reducing medical tourism by attracting patients from across Nigeria.
“With significant investment in the health sector, the Abia Medical City will soon be flagged off. This project is a game-changer, intended to provide top-tier medical services and redirect healthcare traffic to the state,” the Health Commissioner noted.
Kanu also spoke about efforts to boost the state’s oil production capacity. He revealed that a Special Purpose Vehicle with a 40% equity stake has been established to drive the modular refinery project.
“The modular refinery is progressing as planned and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. This will significantly enhance the economic fortunes of the state,” Kanu assured.
