Athletic Bilbao secured their place in the Europa League quarter-finals after a 3-1 second-leg victory over AS Roma on Thursday, with Nico Williams netting twice to guide them to a 4-3 aggregate win.
Meanwhile, Lazio progressed with a 1-1 draw at home against Viktoria Plzen.
Lazio’s next challenge will be Bodo/Glimt, who continued their remarkable European journey despite a 2-1 loss at Olympiacos.
Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt comfortably dispatched Ajax Amsterdam with a commanding 4-1 triumph.
Having won the first leg 2-1, Roma’s hopes took an early hit when Mats Hummels received a red card in the 11th minute for a last-man foul on Maroan Sannadi, who had capitalized on his misplaced pass.
Williams pulled Bilbao level on aggregate just before halftime when his shot deflected off Angelino and found the net.
The Spanish side seized control in the 68th minute when Yuri Berchiche rose highest to nod home from a corner.
Williams struck again to put the result beyond doubt, though an added-time penalty converted by Leandro Paredes set up a tense finish.
Bilbao, however, held firm and will now face either Rangers or Fenerbahce in the last eight.
Lazio entered their home leg with a 2-1 advantage but saw that lead erased early in the second half when Pavel Sulc rifled home following a layoff from Rafiu Durosinmi.
Extra time loomed until Alessio Romagnoli headed in from a corner with 13 minutes remaining, ensuring the Italian side’s progression.
Bodo/Glimt, already in control after winning the first leg by three goals, extended their aggregate lead when Kasper Hoegh, who had scored twice in the opening encounter, found the net from inside the six-yard box.
Olympiacos mounted a response through two goals from Roman Yaremchuk, but their comeback hopes faded when they missed a penalty and went down to 10 men following Konstantinos Tzolakis’ dismissal. Bodo advanced 4-2 overall.
Frankfurt, who held a narrow 2-1 first-leg lead over Ajax, wasted no time asserting dominance. Jean Bahoya and Mario Götze both struck inside the opening 25 minutes to put the Bundesliga outfit in control.
Hugo Ekitike later dazzled with a brilliant solo goal before Kenneth Taylor pulled one back for the Dutch side.
Götze then added his second of the match, sealing a resounding 6-2 aggregate triumph. Frankfurt will now prepare to face either Tottenham Hotspur or AZ Alkmaar in the quarter-finals.
