The Nigeria Police Force has called on the Osun State Government to suspend the upcoming Local Government elections, citing serious security threats and legal uncertainties.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, intelligence reports suggest a high risk of violence if the elections proceed as planned.
The police disclosed that various groups, including political actors, are allegedly mobilizing to instigate unrest and disrupt public peace.
“In light of credible intelligence gathered through joint security efforts, there is a significant threat to public safety should the elections take place,” Adejobi stated.
“The Nigeria Police Force strongly advises that the planned elections be put on hold to prevent a breakdown of law and order.”
The police emphasized that allowing the polls to proceed under the current volatile circumstances could escalate into widespread disturbances, posing dangers to lives and property.
While security agencies are prepared to act decisively against any unrest, the statement stressed that suspending the elections would be the most effective way to avert unnecessary confrontations.
Apart from security concerns, the NPF also highlighted legal complications surrounding the elections.
The police referenced a recent judgment by the Court of Appeal on February 22, 2025, which overturned a Federal High Court ruling on Local Government administration in Osun State.
The verdict, according to the statement, raises questions about the legality of the planned elections.
“It is also imperative to consider the Attorney-General of the Federation’s legal clarification on the judicial pronouncements regarding Local Government administration in Osun,” Adejobi added. “The Court of Appeal ruling reinforces the argument that the elections, in their current form, lack a strong legal foundation.”
The police urged all political parties and stakeholders to exercise restraint and prioritize the safety and well-being of citizens.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that democratic processes in the country are upheld in accordance with the law,” Adejobi assured.
