The Jigawa State Government has announced plans to build 10 small dams across the state to support dry-season farming and protect farmlands from flooding.
According to The PUNCH, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Flood Control and Climate Change, Hamza Hadejia made the disclosure during a live interactive session at the Jigawa State Broadcasting House in Dutse.
The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive for a nationwide assessment of existing dams to determine necessary repairs and improvements. The move is expected to enhance the agricultural sector and mitigate flood risks across the country.
Hadejia explained that the dam project is strategically designed to address recurring floods in riverine communities while also ensuring a steady water supply for irrigation.
“We are constructing these small dams in areas where rivers pass through to mitigate flooding and prevent water from overflowing into farmlands,” he stated.
He further noted that research is already underway to determine the best locations for the dams to maximize their effectiveness.
