The Federal Government has urged drivers, particularly those operating articulated trucks, to adhere to diversion signs as height restriction barriers will soon be reinstated on the Iddo Bridge to facilitate necessary repairs.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, disclosed this on Saturday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria.
She emphasized the importance of the restrictions to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge.
“I appeal to all road users, especially drivers of articulated trucks, to be aware that we will soon reinstall height restriction barriers on the Iddo Bridge,” she said.
“The barriers were previously installed but later removed due to certain issues. However, we are now giving ample notice before putting them back in place.”
Kesha explained that the restrictions would primarily affect trucks exceeding three meters in height. “Any truck above this height will not be able to use the bridge once the barriers are in place,” she added.
She urged drivers to slow down and pay attention to diversion signs and traffic personnel stationed to manage movement during the period. “The goal is to ensure that the bridge remains safe for public use while we carry out necessary repairs,” she said.
According to Kesha, a structural evaluation had revealed defects in multiple spans of the 550-meter bridge. “We have identified three major defective spans, and the repair process will take about six months, involving breaking down and recasting them,” she explained.
She assured motorists that although the initial phase of restrictions targets heavy vehicles, lighter vehicles may also be affected in the long run.
Kesha called for patience and cooperation from road users, stating that the repair work was essential for public safety and long-term infrastructure improvement.
