The Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr. Taiwo Lasisi, has disclosed that thousands of certificates belonging to past graduates remain uncollected, prompting the institution to consider introducing fines for those who fail to retrieve them.
According to The PUNCH, Lasisi announced that all certificates for the 2023/2024 graduands have been signed and will be available for collection immediately after the 39th convocation ceremony, scheduled for Friday, February 14, 2025.
“It may interest you that the certificates of all the graduands have been signed and are ready for collection immediately after the graduation,” he said.
“I also want to disclose that thousands of certificates of previous graduates are waiting for collection. The institution may have to introduce fines for those who have not come to collect their certificates.”
Unlike the previous convocation, which combined multiple graduating classes, this year’s ceremony will be dedicated solely to the 2023/2024 graduands, as the institution has cleared its backlog of graduates.
Dr. Lasisi emphasized that the institution has strengthened its academic policies and disciplinary measures, leading to the dismissal of some students due to academic shortcomings or misconduct.
He assured that security would be a top priority during the convocation, with both internal security personnel and external agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, deployed to maintain order.
“The Polytechnic Ibadan will continue to be one of the foremost and leading institutions across the country,” he stated, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.
The rector expressed gratitude to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the event. He praised the governor’s contributions to education in the state, particularly in facilitating accreditation, re-accreditation, and the introduction of new programs at the institution.
