A lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Emeka Chukwuma, was killed by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Asaba, Delta State, on Friday night.
According to The PUNCH, sources revealed that the 56-year-old professor had returned to his hometown, Umueji in Asaba, for his usual weekend visit when the attack occurred. The incident happened at St. Bridges area of Umueji quarters.
“Prof. Chukwuma typically spends his weekends at home in Asaba. Sadly, he was assassinated in his residence last night,” a community member disclosed, expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation in the area.
The late academic, who was previously stationed at the Anwai campus of Delta State University, had returned to the Abraka campus following the conversion of Anwai into Dennis Osadebey University.
“Asaba is becoming increasingly unsafe. We don’t know what to do anymore,” another resident lamented, calling for urgent action from authorities.
This latest killing adds to a series of violent incidents reported in Asaba, where residents have raised alarms over rising cases of killings and kidnappings.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, assured the public that investigations were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Yes, the killing has been reported to the police, and we are currently investigating the matter,” SP Edafe said.
