The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has extended heartfelt condolences to the Niger State Government and its residents following the devastating tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
The National Emergency Management Agency reported that the explosion tragically claimed over 70 lives, left 56 others injured, and caused significant destruction to shops and properties in the area.
In a statement issued by Mrs. Rhoda Ishaku, Director of Information and Public Relations, Professor Yilwatda expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as “pathetic and unfortunate.”
He offered prayers for the departed souls and for the speedy recovery of those injured. Additionally, he urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and adhere to road safety measures, including routine vehicle checks.
Professor Yilwatda also praised Governor Umaru Bago for his swift visit to the accident site and recognized the efforts of emergency response teams, including the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Police, in managing the crisis and evacuating victims.
Similarly, the IGP condemned the incident as a tragic event, noting that it occurred when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and ignited, resulting in extensive loss of life and property.
In his statement, the IGP highlighted the need for strict adherence to road safety standards and directed State Commissioners of Police to enhance the operations of their Motor Traffic Divisions in collaboration with other traffic agencies.
He further called on vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and to follow traffic rules to avert such catastrophic incidents.
