The Federal Government on Thursday addressed comments made by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking at a public event in Lagos on Wednesday, Sanusi acknowledged the importance of the reforms but disclosed his decision not to publicly advise the government, citing personal reasons.
In a statement issued by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government recognized the Emir’s right to express his views but criticized his admission of withholding support.
The government suggested that Sanusi’s stance may stem from personal grievances rather than an objective assessment of the policies.
“While we respect the Emir’s right to share his perspective, it is disappointing that a leader, especially one from an institution rooted in forthrightness, fairness, and justice, would admit to holding back the truth due to personal interest or imagined antagonism,” the statement read.
Idris emphasized the necessity of the reforms, describing them as critical to addressing Nigeria’s long-standing economic challenges.
“This administration has embarked on bold and transformative measures—not because they are easy, but because they are essential for ensuring Nigeria’s stability and growth. Even Emir Sanusi has consistently advocated for such steps,” the minister stated.
The government highlighted key reforms such as the unification of exchange rates, which it said has boosted investor confidence and foreign reserves, as well as the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has redirected funds to critical sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
“These temporary pains, as the Emir himself acknowledged, are the price of reversing decades of irresponsible economic management,” Idris added, citing projections from international organizations like the World Bank as evidence of the reforms’ positive long-term impact.
The statement also expressed concern over Sanusi’s perceived shift in loyalty, urging him to prioritize national interest over personal or partisan considerations.
“This is a critical moment for Nigeria. What we need is unity, focus, and sacrifice. Leaders owe it to Nigerians to refrain from rhetoric that undermines public trust and instead work collaboratively toward our shared goal of a prosperous nation,” the minister said.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive economy and called for constructive dialogue with stakeholders. It urged Nigerians and leaders alike to prioritize the country’s collective progress, stressing that unity and collaboration are essential for national development.
“Rebuilding Nigeria requires all hands on deck. Let us champion the collective goal of a stronger and more prosperous nation, setting aside unnecessary distractions,” Idris concluded.
