The Kano State government has issued a directive requiring all landowners to renew their Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) by January 31, 2025, warning that failure to comply could result in the revocation of their land titles.
According to The PUNCH, this announcement was made by the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Abduljabbar Umar, during a press briefing on Wednesday.
He called on all property owners to visit the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning to register or renew their land documents.
Umar explained that the directive aligns with the state’s ongoing recertification exercise, initiated during the re-commissioning of the Kano State Geographic Information System by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on November 25, 2024.
“If you may recall, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, during the re-commissioning of the KANGIS building, officially flagged off the recertification of all Certificates of Occupancy issued by the Kano State Government. Today, I am here to reinforce this call and urge all landowners to proceed to the Ministry to renew their land titles,” Umar said.
The commissioner emphasized that all existing Certificates of Occupancy will become invalid after the January 31 deadline.
“To ensure the integrity and security of land ownership in Kano, the state has introduced a modern system under KANGIS, which eliminates manual processes, minimizes errors, and reduces manipulation of land files and delays in transactions,” he stated.
The new certificates, Umar added, are embedded with advanced security features to prevent forgery and fraud, ensuring landowners’ investments are protected.
“These measures are aimed at safeguarding the aspirations of our people and providing accurate, reliable land records. We are committed to creating a seamless and affordable process for obtaining secure land titles,” he said.
Umar urged all landowners to act promptly to avoid losing their property rights. “This is a critical step in protecting your investment and ensuring your land title remains valid. Do not wait until the last minute to begin this process.”
