South Korea’s Interior Minister, Lee Sang-min, announced his resignation on Sunday, citing a failure to adequately serve the public and President Yoon Suk Yeol.
His decision follows widespread turmoil triggered by the government’s declaration of martial law earlier in the week.
According to the AFP, Lee’s resignation was confirmed by local reports, with President Yoon accepting his departure, according to the JoongAng Ilbo.
Both officials are currently under investigation for alleged insurrection tied to the martial law decree.
The controversial declaration, issued on Tuesday, was met with fierce opposition and ultimately overturned on Saturday after parliament rejected the measure.
The same day, President Yoon narrowly avoided impeachment, as lawmakers voted against removing him from office.
Authorities also detained former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun earlier on Sunday. Kim, who oversaw the martial law operation, was already subject to a travel ban before his arrest.
