The Anambra State Government has launched an investigation into the alleged assault on Okey Akaneme, a former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture.
The incident reportedly involved officials of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency and officers from the state police command.
According to The PUNCH, the Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odumegwu, stated that while the government does not support any form of violence, preliminary findings suggest that ASWAMA officials might not be directly responsible.
“The Anambra State Government does not tolerate assault or touting in any form, and if any official is found culpable, they will face appropriate consequences,” Odumegwu said. He added that the immediate focus is on addressing the victim’s medical condition.
According to reports, Akaneme was attacked at his residence on Obi Lane, America Quarters, Onitsha, on October 11, during a visit by ASWAMA officials and two policemen from the Onitsha Central Police Station. The team allegedly stormed his home over unpaid sanitation fees.
Eyewitnesses claimed that Akaneme, still in his sleepwear, requested time to prepare himself but was forcefully handled by the officials. A close associate, Okechukwu Ani, recounted that the confrontation left Akaneme with severe spinal injuries.
“When neighbors intervened, they realized the extent of the injuries inflicted on him. At that point, the officials allegedly left him incapacitated, unable to move his neck or legs,” Ani said.
Akaneme was initially taken to Holy Rosary Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, before being transferred to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.
He is currently receiving advanced medical care at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, where doctors have reported significant spinal damage.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with residents and human rights organizations criticizing the state government for its initial silence. Many are demanding transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
Odumegwu assured the public that the government is committed to ensuring justice while prioritizing Akaneme’s recovery.
“We have been trying to contact the victim to offer assistance for his medical needs. Investigations are ongoing, and we will uncover the truth behind this unfortunate incident,” he stated.
The state police command has been less forthcoming. While the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, declined to comment, a senior officer confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further inquiries.
