Commuters in Lagos have urged the state government to expedite repairs on the damaged Ikeja Overpass Bridge, as concerns mount over potential safety risks if delays persist.
Initial reports claimed part of the bridge had collapsed, with commuters sharing videos and photos as evidence.
The PUNCH, however, has since confirmed that the damage was caused by a truck accident over the weekend.
The incident occurred when a truck, descending the bridge late Friday night, suffered brake failure.
The driver reportedly lost control, and in a desperate attempt to stop the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane, crashing into a barricade.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The truck was removed by authorities the following day, Saturday.
One commuter, identified simply as Chris, recounted the accident, stating, “The incident happened late Friday night when the truck was descending the bridge. We got to know that its brake failed and it swerved towards the other lane and hit the barricade to force the truck to a halt. The truck was removed on Saturday.”
Residents and local business owners have since voiced their concerns, urging the government to address the situation quickly.
A trader in the area, Sanusi Olaniya, explained, “The moment the government removed the truck and also removed the rubble, they immediately barricaded the affected part. But we want them to repair it on time because it is even riskier leaving that place open.”
On Wednesday, it was observed that barricades were set up to secure the damaged portion.
However, some residents worry that the temporary solution is inadequate. Another trader, identified simply as Chuks, highlighted the dangers faced by pedestrians and nearby businesses operating on the ground level below the bridge.
“If a truck could manage to damage the bridge to this extent, it is even more dangerous leaving it open this way. Some traders are just by the roadside on the ground floor doing their business. Vehicles that are making U-turns under the bridge are also not safe. The government should please fix it as soon as possible,” Chuks urged.
Lagos State’s Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed his awareness of the incident.
“I saw that thing last night and it looked very fresh. I don’t know when it happened and I have been trying to get the works and infrastructure ministry, to talk about it. I’m not even sure they are aware of it. I will need to find out and get back to you,” he said.
The Ikeja Overpass Bridge, which was inaugurated in December 2023, is a major route for Lagos commuters.
