The Lagos police Command have arrested two women for allegedly conspiring to sell newborn twins.
The suspects, identified as Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, were apprehended by officers from the Lagos State Police Command while travelling with the babies from Abia State to Lagos.
The arrest was made at the Berger bus stop by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division after they received a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
According to a statement released by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the infants, both around six days old, were in the suspects’ possession when they were detained on September 9, 2024.
“Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had been paid ₦150,000 to transport the babies to Lagos,” Hundeyin revealed. “They further stated that the mother of the twins sold them because she felt she couldn’t care for them properly.”
The suspects admitted that they were on their way to meet a nurse in Lagos, whom the mother had promised to connect them with after their arrival.
The case has since been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command for further investigation. The infants have been placed in a motherless babies’ home for care and medical evaluation.
“The suspects were arraigned on September 19, 2024, while the investigation continues as efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals involved,” Hundeyin added.
