At least eight people sustained severe injuries, and one person was confirmed dead following a head-on collision between two commercial buses on the Third Mainland Bridge near the Ilaje area of Lagos State on Monday.
The tragic crash involved two Mazda buses with registration numbers LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH, which were reportedly engaged in a reckless high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele.
The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority,
Adebayo Taofiq, stated that the collision was the result of dangerous driving.
“The two drivers were recklessly speeding and chasing each other, which led to the tragic accident,” Taofiq said.
LASTMA officials swiftly arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue operations, transporting eight severely injured passengers to Gbagada General Hospital for treatment. The Lagos State Ambulance Services facilitated the emergency response.
“The injured passengers suffered multiple fractures,” Taofiq added, urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution to avoid further tragedies on Lagos roads.
Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations provided security during the rescue efforts, helping to restore order and clear the wreckage.
LASTMA expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, saying, “We sympathize with the bereaved family and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
In a separate incident, a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV) overturned on the same bridge near the University of Lagos waterfront, heading towards Iyana-Oworonsoki.
No injuries were reported in this second crash, which was also linked to excessive speeding. LASTMA officers responded quickly, clearing the vehicle and ensuring the flow of traffic.
