Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank, has disclosed that Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka’s departure from the club was driven by his desire for more regular playing time.
Onyeka, who had been with Brentford for three seasons, struggled to secure a consistent starting role at the Gtech Community Stadium.
This led him to seek a loan move to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga just before the English transfer window closed.
In discussing Onyeka’s exit, Frank noted, “Frank wants to play week in, week out as a starter; this is a good opportunity for him to do that. He has been a big part of our success, and I can’t praise him enough for that in every aspect,” as reported on Brentford’s official website.
The departure of Onyeka leaves Brentford with a thinner squad, particularly in midfield.
With the recent transfer of Ivan Toney to Saudi Arabia and Thiago Rodrigues, his replacement, sidelined until December due to injury, the Bees are facing challenges in bolstering their squad depth.
Despite these setbacks, Brentford has shown resilience in the early stages of the 2024-25 Premier League season, securing victories in two of their first three matches.
Their next major challenge will be against Manchester City under the management of Pep Guardiola on Saturday, which will be a significant test of their squad’s capabilities.
