Two fighters from Lebanon’s Hezbollah on Sunday were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the village of Taybeh, near the Israeli border, as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to escalate.
The Lebanese health ministry confirmed the deaths, which Hezbollah later identified as members of its group.
The Israeli military reported multiple strikes throughout the day, targeting Hezbollah military installations in the Adaisseh region, adjacent to Taybeh.
The military also confirmed an attack on a Hezbollah cell in Taybeh and the destruction of a military structure in Derdghaiya, which resulted in secondary explosions, indicating the presence of weapons.
In a separate incident, three Syrians were reportedly killed in an Israeli strike on Derdghaiya, according to a local government union.
Tensions have skyrocketed since a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs late last month killed Hezbollah’s top military commander, Fuad Shukr, just hours before the assassination, blamed on Israel, of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
An “Israeli strike that targeted the village of Taybeh today left two dead,” the Lebanese health ministry said in a statement.
Hezbollah confirmed they were group fighters, killed in Taybeh near the border with Israel.
The official National News Agency reported that “a drone fired two missiles on the village of Taybeh”.
The Israeli military said it had “struck throughout the day several Hezbollah military structures in the area of Adaisseh”, which is located next to Taybeh.
The Lebanese health ministry also announced the death of a civilian who succumbed to injuries sustained in a previous Israeli strike on the village of Beit Lif.
Hezbollah has been engaged in near-daily exchanges of fire with Israel, supporting Hamas since the militant group’s October 7 assault on Israel, which ignited the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The situation intensified after an Israeli strike late last month killed Hezbollah’s top military commander, Fuad Shukr, and the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which was also attributed to Israel.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for several attacks on Israeli military positions in northern Israel on Sunday, including drone strikes.
The recent cross-border violence has claimed the lives of at least 565 people in Lebanon, most of whom were fighters, along with 116 civilians.
On the Israeli side, 48 people, including 22 soldiers and 26 civilians, have been killed. The ongoing conflict has led to the displacement of thousands on both sides of the border.
