Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed his gratitude to the residents of Abia for heeding his call to avoid participating in the ongoing protests against economic hardship, which have resulted in loss of life and property damage in other areas.
According to The PUNCH, Governor Otti thanked the people for maintaining peace and refraining from joining the demonstrations.
He acknowledged the residents during his visit to the Sabbath worship at the church on No 1 School Road.
Previously, Otti had urged Abians not to join the protests during a private meeting with Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.
In a state broadcast on July 31, Otti recognized the right to peaceful protest but cautioned that such actions could be hijacked by disruptive elements, undermining the progress his administration has made.
Addressing the congregation, Otti said, “I appreciate all Abia residents who listened to my plea to avoid taking to the streets, disrupting activities, or potentially causing chaos. I understand the challenges we face, but disrupting daily earners like traders, Keke riders, barbers, and taxi drivers would only worsen our problems.”
He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and assured residents that their concerns have been heard. Otti also announced plans to repair the deteriorating School Road, to the delight of the congregation.
The governor thanked the church for their support since his first election campaign in 2015 and asked for their continued prayers for his administration.
During the service, Pastor Ifeanyichukwu Nwaoguikpe delivered a sermon on “Living out the Christian Slogan,” urging Christians to spread the gospel and help those in need, referencing the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Governor Otti was accompanied by several officials, including Hon. Ucheonye Stephen, Apostle K.C. Wiper, Hon. Uche Nwogu, Sir Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti, and others, who also received prayers from the church.
