A Nigerian, and three other healthcare workers, have been jailed after being captured on camera mistreating an elderly patient.
The Nigerian, Morountaro Adefila and Ame Tunkara were convicted of ill-treatment and wilful neglect, receiving a four-month prison term on December 8.
Similarly, Danny Ohen and Bridget Aideyan faced the same charges and were sentenced to six months and four months in prison, respectively, on November 14.
Police disclosed that the workers were recorded on camera mistreating an 89-year-old woman diagnosed with vascular dementia and unable to communicate.
In February 2020, the woman’s family, noticing bruising on her arm, installed a camera secretly, capturing footage over four days.
The footage revealed the woman being handled roughly, struck with a pillow, and treated without dignity or respect.
Tragically, the woman passed away in October, prompting a police official to remark that she “should not have experienced such mistreatment during her remaining years.”
