The House of Representatives has passed a resolution to initiate an investigation into the operations of Smith Engineering Company Limited.
This decision comes in response to alleged failure on the part of the company to fulfill a N3.2 billion contract awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission back in 2016.
The motion, titled ‘Need to complete the Shore protection project at Ibeno Local Government Area and other Niger Delta Development Commission Projects abandoned in Eket/Onna/Esit-Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State,’ was adopted by the House.
The House disclosed that the contract, amounting to N3.29 billion, was awarded to Smith Engineering Company Limited, with an initial payment of N1.64 billion, representing 50 percent of the total contract sum, disbursed to the contractor to facilitate the commencement of the project.
In response to this development, the House has tasked its Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission with the responsibility of ensuring the project’s completion.
The committee has been directed to provide a report within four weeks for further legislative action.
